"The Great Gatsby" Discussion Question

Why do you think Gatsby has his parties?

  1. I think Gatsby hosts his big parties for two main reasons. The reason in the book states that Gatsby hosts them because he wants to see if Daisy would ever show up to one of them. This is why he allows stangers to come, because he hopes that Daisy would one day just walk in. The other main reason is because I think he is sometimes insecure about himself. He has a lot of money and doesn't need all of it for himself. He can have these big parties so that he can see how other people act. I think he may have some sort of trauma due to the war. He may be re-learning how to interact and socialize with other people.

  2. Gatsby hosts his parties because he wants to see if Daisy will come. He wants to know if Daisy still loves him or if she loves Tom. He is too shy to go ask her in person, and may not want to disrupt their life, so he just hosts parties. I think Becca is correct in saying that he allows strangers to come so that Daisy does not have to feel that she needs an invitation to come.
